What to Bring (and Wear)
Bring a valid license, your helmet and gloves, closed-toe shoes, and a small phone flashlight. If you’re test riding at a dealership, bring a credit card and ID for the demo waiver and ask about insurance requirements. For private sales, bring the seller’s name and address, a simple bill-of-sale template, and a notepad with the scooter’s asking price, VIN, and mileage. A calm checklist makes the whole experience easier.
Before You Start: Walkaround and Paperwork
Match the VIN on the frame to the title or registration. Note mileage and confirm it fits the story. Scan plastics for stress cracks at mounting points, mirrors for wobble, and bars for symmetry when the front wheel is straight. Squeeze both brakes; levers should feel firm, not spongy. Check switchgear: indicators should cancel cleanly, horn should be crisp, and the starter should engage confidently. At speed, it should track straight—light off the bars for a second on a flat, empty stretch; it should not drift. Brake firmly in a straight line: you want strong, linear response with no pulsing (unless ABS engages briefly) and no bar vibration. Over bumps, the suspension should absorb without pogoing or harsh bottoming. Wind should not make the scooter feel nervous for its class.
Noises, Vibrations, and Smells—What’s Normal
Normal: a soft CVT whir, faint clutch chatter just as you move off, and tire noise on coarse asphalt. Watch-outs: metallic knocking under steady throttle, belt “chirp” that doesn’t fade, harsh front-end clunks over small bumps, or a high-pitched whine that rises and falls with speed. Odors should be neutral; hot rubber after a long ride can be normal, but burning oil or fuel isn’t. If the seller recently washed the engine area to hide leaks, you may catch sweet coolant or fuel hints—slow down and investigate.
Electrics and Lighting
Confirm high/low beam, indicators, brake light (both levers), horn, and dash warning lights. ABS light should self-check then turn off once rolling (if equipped). If the scooter has a charging port or removable battery (electric), confirm the charger powers on and connectors seat securely. A dim headlight or inconsistent cluster backlight can be an early sign of charging system issues—note it.
After the Ride: What The Numbers Say
Write down your impressions while they’re fresh: cold start (easy/rough), idle (steady/uneven), acceleration (smooth/surging), braking (linear/spongy), tracking (straight/pulls), and any noises. Photograph the dash for mileage and any warnings. If you’re at a dealership, ask for the out-the-door price (including doc, freight, setup, tax, title, and registration) so you can compare apples to apples. For private sales, confirm title status, lien release if applicable, and your local registration steps. A scooter that feels calm in the lot and composed on the street is usually the right answer.
